On 1 October 2006 there is a new driving licence. The current paper driving licence is replaced by a new, tamper-resistant plastic card. The new document is more secure, has a handy credit card format and is abrasion resistant.

Tamper-proof
Main reason for the new driving licence to enter, is the better security against fraud and forgery. This is necessary, because the driving licence since the introduction of the Law on the compulsory identification formally designated as document of identification. The security level of the new licence is equal to that of the Dutch passport and the identity card. In addition, the Netherlands with the new driver’s license in the only with almost all EU member states.

New application process
Not only driving change, but also the application process. To fraud and forgery, the new driving licence – just like the passport and the id card – central produced. The disadvantage is that the current ‘ready while your wait ” service expires. In the new situation of applicants driver’s license a week after request pick-up at the town hall.
It is possible to make the driving faster to get with a female. The new license can then after one business day to be picked up, if the application for 16.00 is submitted to the municipality. For this procedure, additional fees will be charged.

Herinneringsbrief
To avoid that people forget the driver’s license to renew, the RDW will send all owners a timely herinneringsbrief. People with a valid driver’s license of the current model need not have a new driving licence. Only at renewal time, they will get automatically the driver’s license in the new form.

A result of the switch from paper to plastic card with advanced security features and a secured afgifteproces, is that the cost of the new licence is expected to be four euro to rise. The new driving licence is just like the old document of ten years.
